IVF – Halfway There

We are almost halfway there with IVF. I was albeit anxious coz I was remembering the unsuccessful pre-IUI injections that I had with Dr. J over at Raffles. Just worried that the eggs would not grow. Anyhooos, this is gonna be quite a lenghty entry plus a lil bit descriptive.

21 April 2014 (Monday)
I was a nervous wreck waiting for my turn for the scan that morning. I kept asking the husband, what if it’s like the pre-IUI. He just brushed it off that I was just over-thinking things. So during the scan, the nurse read out that my lining was 7.8mm. The biggest follicle that I had was 15mm, followed by 14mm, 11.5mm, 10.5mm and 9mm; the rest were about the same and the smallest was 8mm. I was reading somehere in one of the forums that you need at least an 18mm. 🙁 So met up with one of the doctors and she mentioned that since I had my jab this morning, it should grow more and that she needed me to take one more jab tomorrow morning, same dosage of 187.5 for the Gonal-F and they gave me one more syringe for Orgulutran. Reached home, I gorged down more red bean soup and hopes that the uterine lining would be better.

22 April 2014 (Tuesday)
So in the morning at 6.30am, I did one more dosage of Gonal-F and Orgalutran. The pain for me never gets any better. I tell ya – needles and me don’t go well together! So again, the scan in the morning and my lining grew by 0.5mm – 8mm. Just nice! My follicles grew to 17.5mm, 15mm, 13mm, 11.5mm, etc and somehow the right has more as compared to the left. In total, I have abt 24 good follicles. The doc mentioned that since I had the jab in the morning, it’d still be growing. So the doc that I’m good to go for the Egg Retrieval on Thursday. I need to come back tonight at 10pm for my last shot on the bum! -______- Here’s a where you can find a brief description of Pregnyl.

Pregnyl Injections

The night jab was not as painful as how I’d expect it to be or was it because the nurse knew how to distract me. So tomorrow, it’ll be a drug free day for me.

24 April 2014 (Thursday)
So it’s THE DAY! I was told to fast the night before from midnight onwards. The last time that I was in an operating theater, I was doing my ovarian drilling. You can read it up here and here. We reached early, settled the paperworks and the nurse mentioned that if all goes well, my embie transfer will be on Saturday. I thought that we had more time since the schedule time was 9.20am but the nurse ushered me to go to a waiting area and change. Said my goodbyes to the husband and I almost teared. He was then asked to produce his sample in another room. So while waiting, there was another lady, from Cambodia. Made small talk with her and I noticed that she had a drip head inserted on top of her right hand. Being dramatic here but I felt so lost coz I was alone and to had a needle stuck on your hand and waiting and still moving around!! Wth! So my turn to place the drip head on the top of ly left hand, it was bearable but still painful for me! So after that Cambodian lady was wheeled out, it was my turn. The whole procedure took 30 mins. I started the procedure abt 10am.

In came Dr. Sadhana, nurses started to inject the anesthetic, painful!!!! I could feel the anesthetic flow by the left arm and it was stinging. Before I could react, I concussed! The next time I came around it was abt 11am. A nurse gave me some biscuits and milo and after a while I was good to go. They escorted me to the changing room and that is when I realized that blood was dripping down my leg! Like a lot a lot of blood! The nurse checked in and I told her what happened and she mentioned that it’s normal – after surgery residue. The bloated-ness and the pain and that was enough to make me cry. Came out and luckily the husband was already nearby. He too said that he felt lost coz not knowing what I had to go through. The nurse told me that I had 13 good eggs out. Yeay!

25 April 2014 (Friday)
The bloated-ness after the surgery was quite bad. I can’t laugh much and I have to walk really really slowly. So tonight I had to fast again by 11.30pm but was told to drink plain water from 7.40am onwards and not to pee coz they need my bladder full. For the past few days, the boobs were freaking sore. Literally sore!

26 April 2014 (Saturday)
Again we came early in the morning and settled the paper work. We were ushered in to a small room where they had a dentist like chair but with leg support. I was told to change and then waited for Dr. Sadhana to come in. She had positive info for us. 13 eggs were extracted. 9 were fertilized and that 2 embroys will be transfered back to my uterus and 7 will be frozen. 🙂 Dr. Sadhana then mentioned that I had a good grade of egg. From 1 to 5 and 5 being the best, mine was a 5, and that the possibility of twins are possible. 🙂 Imagine a pap smear, the procedure was like that. We were hopeful but anything can happen so we’ll just wait.

I was given Utrogestan, a form of progesterone, to be taken 3 times a day at 8am, 3pm and midnight daily for 19 days. It’s to be inserted below to help the embies ledge onto the uterus lining. Utrogestan can also be taken orally. However, the KK advised us to take the vaginal route for a more immediate absorption at the right place. Really not liking having to do this. They are soft white balls with oily fluids in it. So it’s suppose to dissolve inside.

So now it’s a 2 week wait. Seriously, after the transfer, I was initially afraid to pee or poop. Hahhahahah I’m afraid that the embies may just come out! Ridiculous, I know!

Anyways good luck to Dyan as well for having the same transfer date and 2 week wait! 🙂

Bismillah! 🙂

Like Tini, by sharing our journey in TTC, i hope there will no longer be a stigma around IVF. While it is exhausting, it is actually not as scary as it seems 🙂
