Online Storage

I remembered back in the days when I was in polytechnic and being in a multimedia course, I had to rely on my trusted friend, Phyr, on stuffs like softwares, codes, cracks, patches, etc. Youname it, he will have it! Everything was errrr… pirated or bought from JB or a pasar malam, but I must reiterate that it was done for the sake of learning… hahhahah. Who would have a few hundred bucks or even thousands for licenses for then Macromedia Director, Macromedia Flash, 3D Studio Max or even Visual Basics, etc. I know I didn’t have that luxury and to stay back after school hours…… nah!

Back then, storing our stuffs were mainly using CD-writers or zip drives. I recalled purchasing my first Iomega zip drive for all the work/projects that needed to be submitted to my lecturers. I can’t recall if I ever had a hard disk then, not until much later. So when I was a lil’ financially stable, I paid for original softwares, paid for online music, I got a few hard disks on my own and I stored anything and everything there. Just in one location. Just ONE! My projects, work/project images, photographs and my numerous MP3s downloaded froma 3rd party software like Napster, Limewire, etc. So imagine my horror when my hard disk starts to make some clicking sound and my laptop could and could not detect the hard disk at times. As I have mentioned before, I would always rely on Phyr for help, so once he has helped me salvaged whatever he could, I got myself another hard disk and this is an on-going process. Tsk… I never learn. No wonder Phyr would always give up telling me things in relation to technology at times. :p

Recently, a colleague of mine told me that his entire life worth of photography (I would rather call it memories of him and his ex wife and kids) could not be retrieved at all when his PC’s hard disk died on him. Gone just like that. I looked into my hard disk and I realised that I have 10+ years worth of photographs/ memories in it. I would just crumble if I have to part with a few hundred dollars to pay someone to try and salvage my hard disk or even having everything completely wiped out – EVERYTHING! *the horror*

So I looked into getting an online storage platform. At least, I would have my stuffs on my hard disk, my macbook and online. I went ahead with GoogleDrive. By signing up with a GMail account, I automatically have 15GB of storage space, else if that isn’t enough, I could upgrade to 100GB at USD$1.99 a month or if I need even more, they have 1TB at USD$9.99 a month.

Here are some of the other online storages available if any one of you are interested. Just sharing my experiences. Hope this post might help someone not lose your files in the future. 🙂
